The rest of their conversation on the way back was pleasant and light. Trace was surprised that he felt comfortable to freely give information he rarely even thought about himself, and generally preferred to keep private.

When they pulled up to a stop light, Leslie playfully grabbed the hat off his head and put it on hers. He ran his hands through his hair and it stuck up in all different directions.

Trace grinned at her when he saw her with his hat on. He could picture her riding one of his horses with it on, maybe wearing something skimpy. Or maybe riding him later wearing only his hat. Yes, he rather liked that idea.

He gripped the steering wheel with his left hand and draped his right arm across the back of her seat. He glanced at her then back to the road when the light turned green. "I'm heading back to the ranch, so if I'm completely reading you wrong or am being presumptuous, please let me know now and I'll head toward town to drop you off."

Leslie bit her lip and replied seriously. " I think you should take me back to the hotel."

He slowed the truck and looked over at her, confusion and disappointment clouding his eyes.

She started laughing and pointed at him. She gripped her arms around her waist as she laughed, throwing her head back.

"Oh my god, you should have seen your face!" She laughed again and he shook his head still unsure of what was happening. "Yes, I'll come home with you, Trace."

"You play risky games, darlin’." He admonished her, but couldn't keep the rueful smile from playing at his lips. "You're gonna pay for that later."

Her laughter died slowly and he glanced back over at her.

"Promise?" She whispered, trailing her fingers along his arm.

"Oh, you can count on it." He murmured.
