I awake to the sound of a not-so hushed argument. That answers my question of whether or not I’ve been sleeping at all. My body and mind sure don’t feel like it’s had any rest. I’m exhausted, scared, and just so overwhelmed with everything going on.

Reaching for the water bottle on the floor, I greedily drink the stale liquid down. I fucking hate waking up with the taste of Grayson’s cum in my mouth. Okay, that’s a lie. I… nope. I’m not going to analyze that shit. I’ll stick with hate and plead the fifth while pretending my body isn’t responding to the thought of him sneaking in here and… fuck’s sake. I’m not doing a good job at not thinking about it.

Every day I have to remind myself of my new reality because if I don’t, it seems like the plot of some over the top teen drama. Honestly, even with the reminder, it doesn’t feel like my life.

Unlike the other mornings, or evenings, or whatever the fuck time it is when I awaken, I don’t cry. I’m not sure I have anymore tears left to spare. Or maybe I should find a way to make it happen. Surely Grayson will let me go if I shrivel into the empty husk I feel like.

My head is pounding, my throat raw, and my eyes are so puffy I can barely see anything. Or maybe it’s because my room is hidden in a cloak of heavy darkness. It doesn’t matter. Nothing matters anymore.

This isn’t some fucking fairy tale. There’s no red cape for me to wear. No glass shoe that magically fits me, and if I let my hair down, no prince will use it to scale the walls to free me. I’m well and truly trapped. Not that I want any man in here—prince or otherwise. After what Grayson’s put me through, I’m wondering if solitude is a favor rather than yet another punishment.

“Let me in there to talk to her.”

I recognize Gunner’s voice.

“No.”

And Grayson’s.

“Come on, man. She shouldn’t be alone,” Gunner insists.

I cringe as Grayson deadpans, “She has no one left.”

He isn’t wrong. Everyone has left me.

Mom is dead.

Leslie is dead.

And dad… oh God… dad just took off—he fucking saved his own fucking ass while leaving me at the mercy of Grayson fucking Black. I swallow back a snort at the thought of him showing me any mercy. He’s treating me like enemy number one, all because he thinks I know something I don’t.

“You know that’s not what I meant,” Gunner argues.

“Don’t go feeling sorry for the fucking rat.” Grayson’s voice is eerily calm. “The rodent isn’t your problem. Don’t let me hear you feel sorry for her again.”

“For fuck’s sake, Gray. You’re taking this too far.” The angry lilt to Gunner’s voice surprises me.

“Careful, Gunner,” Grayson thunders. “Your desperation is starting to show. I already told you we’re not going ahead with the plans, so calm the fuck down before I’m forced to think you’re insulting your VP.”

Even though a part of me wishes Gunner could get past Grayson, I’m glad he’s being sent away.
