Chapter 10

Fabian woke in the guest room, only slightly hungover and in full command of his facilities.

A good night’s sleep had restored his brain to working order and at 5 am, and he knew exactly what he had to do. The nearest Dunkin’ Donuts was already open, and he threw on an extra Firehouse 10 shirt to get there bright and early.

Unfortunately, he was not the only insane person with that plan. It was the morning rush with two cashiers ringing people up while another took his order for four dozen donuts.

Other than her request for cream sticks, Fabian had no clue what Cassie’s donut demands would be. It wouldn’t hurt to be prepared, and he’d be a hero at the firehouse if he came in with a bunch of donuts, anyway.

His arms were loaded down with the four boxes. To his annoyance, a blonde guy in front of him was taking an eternity to pick out a single cup of coffee.

“It’s coffee, perezoso. Pick up the pace,” Fabian grumbled. “It’s not a life-changing decision.”

The man turned around with his ice-blue eyes and said, ”Donde esta el fuego, Santos?”

“Holy fuck… Chief Baker, I am so sorry,” Fabian choked, getting a taste of his own medicine after he’d messed with Glen in the ER.

“You’d better not be scheduled to work today after pulling a double yesterday.” The Chief nodded at the pile of donuts.

“I’m not working… I was…” Fabian was not telling the Chief about his romantic challenges. “I was hungry. I’ll share the leftovers at my firehouse later.”

“If that’s the case, these are on me.” The Chief signaled the cashier to ring up Fabian and paid with his credit card. “Need a hand?”

“Sure, sir.” The Chief grabbed his coffee and held the door for Fabian to exit. Then he helped Fabian unlock his truck and maneuver the boxes inside. “Thank you, sir.”

“My pleasure.” The Chief sipped his coffee.

Fabian reexamined the Chief and exclaimed without thinking. “Those are workout clothes… I’ve never seen you without your uniform on.”

The Chief raised his eyebrows, waiting to see if Fabian rethought that comment.

“I meant… hell… fuck. I’m not hitting on you. It’s that you’re always in the white shirt and black blazer.” The Chief was wearing a tight blue performance shirt which brought out his legendary eyes.

“Neither are very conducive to yoga or meditation.”

Fabian couldn’t believe his ears. “Yoga? You do yoga?”

“Only on occasion. I prefer punching things, but that often doesn’t fix the problem.”

Without thinking, Fabian said, “It doesn’t put the garage back together for sure. Or the fire engine.”

“Yes, I know,” the Chief said. “There will be repercussions for that—not for you. Your report was excellent.”

“Don’t be too hard on them, patron.” Fabian decided he might as well go in for the whole enchilada, the Big Mac, and the super-sized fries. “Yes, they broke protocol, but it was to save the life of a teammate. Five years ago, you broke protocol and led the rescue of James yourself as battalion chief. I was there at your side when you did his CPR.
