It’s not until over an hour later when Lola and Leonie wrangle Baz and Roger from the pool table do we call it a night.

I snag my lower lip between my teeth to keep from chuckling at her indignation.

“What time is it?” She asks, glancing around for her mobile on the nightstand.

I sit up and cup her face.

“Baby Girl, it’s after two in the morning. I want to check on you—”

“Oh, please, Lachlan!” She says, snatching her face from my grasp and pushing on my chest. “Check on me for what? To gauge my level of embarrassment? To determine how silly I was to trust you? Oh, I know… To rub in my face your fiancée?!”

By the time she’s finished, her fists pummel my chest and tears slide down her flush cheeks. I hold her hands to my heart.

“No! Let go of me, Lachlan!” She says as her voice rises with her distress.

“Haley! Hush! You’ll wake everyone,” I warn her.

She goes still.
