Over the next week, monitor how you and your spouse treat girls or women differently based on physical appearance. Consider these key situations:

comments while watching TV or a movie

comments in the mall

gender-related smart remarks around the house to sister or Mom

how you treat attractive females versus not-so-attractive ones

Turn your list into personal statements: “We equate beautiful with dumb,” or, “We think pretty girls should get the benefit of the doubt.” Think on it for a while because the attitudes you are communicating may not be what you really value or want your son to value. Write up a revised list of value statements—for example, “Attractiveness is great, but it has nothing to do with how well I treat a girl.” Share it with your son. Help him to arrive at his own list; encourage him to write them down, and carry them on his person for a while.
