Background noise can be annoying but fortunately there is a squelch control to mute it. Squelch suppresses unwanted noise when there isn’t a strong enough signal to receive. It is a filter that takes out the background noise and static that your radio is always going to be picking up.

Most modern transceivers have memory channels and a memory location you can store frequency offsets, access tone and a few other parameters. They can either be accessed directly or you can scan them. Therefore, the best way to quickly access your favorite frequency is to save it in a memory channel.
