Sophie’s eyes go wide, her mouth dropping open as she stares at me. I’m having a hard time grasping the sudden change myself.

I just spoke to another being, something that I haven’t been able to do in years. A torrent of emotion rises up in me, tightening my throat until it feels difficult to breathe. I had resigned myself to never being able to do this again, to being locked in my own head forever. Sophie’s teachings helped a little, but I wasn’t so foolish as to truly believe that she could teach me an entire language within any reasonable space of time. Just the few words were enough, I told myself. Just being able to speak with her even a little.

But now I can truly speak and be understood. Until this moment, I never let myself grasp the magnitude of what I’d lost, knowing I’d go mad if I did. But now that I seem to have it back, both the grief over having lost it for so long and the pure, thrilling joy of having it back collide, until my heart feels like it will explode out of my chest with emotion.

I attacked one of my masters, and they knocked me out, cut into my head and crushed the chip. I was—” I take a deep breath. “I was awake for some of it. I don’t know how or why it started working again now, but it must have, somehow.” I give her a small smile, trying to soothe her as she’s done so many times for me. “Maybe all those words that you were teaching me jumpstarted it in some way. Made the neurons in my brain start firing and reconnecting to it. Maybe you’re why it’s working again.”

When I mention the punishment that caused the chip to be crushed in the first place, I see a flare of anger pass through her features, but not surprise. She must have already known or guessed that I was a slave, based on the fact that we were both kept in that squalid warehouse on Nierra. I’m sure that, as often as she came to visit me in the holding cell in the city here, she was told things about me as well. And I can’t imagine that my past
