Chapter Five

Chapter Five

A man born to be a winner thrives on the mission upon which he embarks. There is no victory without it. To succeed at the mission, he starts with the will to take it on, then he considers the challenges in his way, and ultimately forms a plan to overcome those challenges and win. I am such a man. And I intended to be the winner.

My mission was in the forefront of my mind. It was taking up my every thought, and despite not having slept all night, I was not tired. I was staring at Tala, her slumbering form strewn across our bed like a young man’s masturbatory fantasy come true. She was delightfully nude, and I watched as she shifted in her sleep. Her thighs brushed languidly against one another and one soft, creamy breast nestled against the sheets on which Tala slept. Though the sight of my lover made my loins clench with my craving for her, it was the mission that kept me too restless to sleep.

I left the bed quietly and headed into the living room. Evidence of our night’s drinking, empty glasses and bottles, and remnants of our breakfast were still cluttering the table by the window. I was to help Tala find Bilal, the man who was married to the woman I love. A selfish, petulant part of me hoped that I would find Bilal dead, but I wasted no time feeling guilty over the thought. Instead, I spent my energy on devising a plan.

Would I go to Turkey? Lebanon? Would I contact my connections back home and put out a worldwide alert with the media? Such a thing might be an incredible boost for my public relations—I was suddenly interrupted by unexpected and surprising thoughts of a comeback. The seeds of a new book were already germinating, and I paced across the living room. Before I realized it, I had a pen and a pad of hotel-branded paper, and I was scribbling fervidly.

The first words I jotted down were, “Tale of Tala,” the title of my new book. It was my first time writing since my last book—my failure. I had committed to giving up altogether, but writing was a drug. How could an addict like me resist the euphoria that Tala’s story represented? I was passionate about the subject already, and after so many hours having been immersed in Tala’s recounting of her story, I was enthralled even more.

I was putting words to paper as they rushed into my mind, by way of my pained heart. I started with how I met Tala and how my failing book led me to her. There was no failing for a winner like me. I was reminded that everything happens for a reason, and my prior book was just a way for the universe to bring me to Tala. Having rationalized all of that, and despite my lack of sleep, I felt invigorated and at home in myself. The old Henry was in full comeback mode.
