Chapter Seven

Natalie and Emily were still on the trail ride when Grace got home, and Abby had gone to her friend Miriam’s house for the afternoon. Mr. Ramirez was on the phone and signaled for her to keep quiet. The house seemed so lonely without people to talk to. Grace wandered from room to room, stopping to give Amigo, Abby’s retired service dog, a pat on the head. She debated about going back to Miz Ida’s to pick the vegetables, but instead she grabbed her soccer ball.

While she was practicing dribbling and shooting, a silver convertible zipped into the driveway. A tall man wearing a baseball cap with a bull embroidered on it slid out of the car as she finished driving toward the net. He stood and watched as she drilled a shot into the top left corner of the net.

He applauded. “Terrific shot.”

Grace grinned. “Thanks. Can I help you?” she asked, searching for her father in the window. Mr. Ramirez waved to her, giving her the okay to go on without him.

The man nodded. “I heard you have an emu here. I’d be happy to take it off your hands.”
