"Easy, honey, where are you?" Mama's voice was shaking, Easy could tell.

"What's wrong, Mama?"

"Can you stop? Can you pull over and stop?" Her voice was small and so scared-sounding. He

was going to freak out if she didn't tell him what was going on.

"Mama!"

"Just pull over and stop, Easy. I have to tell you something and I don't want you hurt. Come on,

honey, please."

"All right. I saw a sign for a rest stop up ahead. There's another sign. Just a minute," he said,

speeding up to get to the exit. There! He eased it down and put his turn signal on. Easy was up

the ramp and into a slot without even thinking about it. After setting the brakes, he said, "Now

tell me. I'm at the rest area."

"Oh baby, I'm so sorry. Let me get this all out, okay? The police showed up at Mano's studio a

while ago and arrested him. Easy, they're saying he murdered that Rott guy that was always

beating up on him. A detective came up here from Tampa and is going to take Mano back with

him to jail there."

"What the hell? Murder? Mano? Come on. This Rott guy is dead? Well, good, as far as I'm

concerned, but how in the world could they think Mano did it?"

"Supposedly there are witnesses who saw him at the scene. The detective from Tampa is taking

him back." Mama's voice had gone from shaky and fearful to angry and worried.

"How do you know so much about all this? Did they call you?" Easy wanted as much

information as he could get.

"That nice Dani lady called to tell me as soon as they took him. She was going to call Nick, and

then he called to tell me he was on his way down there to the station to see what was going on.

He talked to the police, one from here and one from Tampa, and they won't budge. Easy, they're

taking him back with them. What are we going to do? How can we help him?"

"I'll call Nick. Mano will need a lawyer from Tampa, a good one. I bet you anything those thugs

who used to beat Mano are behind this. It'd be easy to implicate Mano; he was gone. They

worked for this Rott guy and they see a way to get suspicion off of themselves. Well, it's not

going to happen."

"I wanted to go down and see him, but Nick told me he might be gone by the time I could get

down there. He's gonna call me if I can see Mano. I'm so worried about him, Easy. He's not some

big guy that can take care of himself in... in places like that." Her voice was shaking again.

"It's not prison, Mom. Jail isn't as bad as that. He's being watched closely now, and he'll be safe

on his way down there. We'll have Nick check into good lawyers down there, and I'll go down

and bring him back."

"How are you going to do that? Aren't you on your way to Detroit?" Mama usually knew where

he was at any given time.
