I opened my eyes and blinked, not quite sure when I dozed off, or what time it even was. It was still light out, that much I could tell. I was nude on Kennedy’s sofa, but she’d vanished from my arms. In her place, a soft blanket was tossed over my body.

I sat up and rubbed my face. “Kennedy?”

Silence.

“Kennedy?” Still nothing.

I stood and moved forward, my shins smacking into the ottoman that had shifted during our romp. “Fucking hell,” I cursed, and continued on.

This was why I didn’t do new places.

I made it to the sliding door and opened the balcony. “Kennedy?”

Nothing but the faint sounds of traffic twenty-seven floors below.

I went back inside. Blinking a few times, I scanned the area, trying to connect the dots. I knew the sofa was to my left, ottoman in front, TV to the right.

Don’t panic. I walked the entire perimeter of the room, right arm out, left arm crossed over me, protecting my face and body. A year ago, the instructor at the Lighthouse showed me that trick during our one-on-one training, learning how to map new rooms, new places, and I blew her off, paying only minimal attention.

Now, I was kicking myself. Everyone was right. I should have been spending the last few years preparing. Instead, I’d hid from the world, staying in my denial-filled bubble.

Thank fuck her apartment was the same layout as mine. It helped. Until I hit something with my shins, and it went clamoring to the floor.

“Fuck!” I reached down, rubbing my hands over the wood floor. Dirt. Leaves. I’d knocked over a plant.

I weaved around the mess and headed toward the door where I dropped my clothes. I needed my fucking phone. Not just to text her and figure out where the hell she was, but to dictate what I saw today before I forgot. The way her hair was pulled back, a few strands falling across her creamy skin. The way she crinkled her little nose and cocked her head to the side when she was curious. The curve of her spine, the tattoo on her back…I wanted to remember every single piece of Kennedy that I possibly could.

Nothing. Where the fuck had she put them? Thankfully, my cane was right in the corner where I’d propped it. Snatching it into my grasp, I went on and searched the bathroom, bedroom, spare room, still, nothing.

The fuck?

I was glad Kennedy wasn’t there to see me like this. Naked. Blind. Wandering her apartment, searching for my goddamn clothes like a fool. I gritted my teeth, cursing her under my breath for just fucking abandoning me to fend for myself. She should have woken me up, told me she was leaving, even if just for a minute. What did she think would happen when I woke up alone, in a new place?

Just like when Erin left me at the Met Gala last year. So many flashing cameras blinding me even more.

Stop it. Stop it now, you fucking jackass. That was your own damn fault.
