Chapter Thirty-Three

I felt like I was made from a wet noodle. Deke was weak and a little too pale. Tash had backed the truck into the garage and the guys made sure we all got up the elevator and onto our floor. Somehow, I made it into the living room before dropping down onto the couch, but I was completely wiped out. Gavin moved to claim the space beside me. Bax and Lars helped carry Deke the other way, toward his room.

When I heard water running, I realized that Tash must have taken him into the bathroom. All I could do was lean over my knees and scrub at my face, trying to make sense of the insanity that had just happened. We'd planned to practice using our area of effect abilities. That had been it. Deke had said we weren't ready to fight full-sized demons yet - and this proved it!

"Did we even get the minor demons out?" I finally asked.

Gavin reached over to release the velcro on my tactical vest. "Enough of them," he promised. "Jess, they've been down there for years. Those are the powerless ones. That's why Deke wanted to practice with them."

"And the ones who attacked were common demons?" Because I knew I'd gotten a quick rundown of demons at some point, but it was all lost in that jumbled mess of "so this is real," and I hadn't sorted it out yet.

He got the rest of the connectors free so I could slip out of my vest. While I worked on peeling that off, Gavin moved his attention to his own. I could hear Deke and Tash talking down the hall, but just the rumble of their voices, not actual words. Bax and Lars still hadn't come back, though.

"I guess demons are like bugs," Gavin explained. "They have stages, and they cocoon to change into the next. Each stage is stronger. Minor demons, lesser demons, common demons, and then greater demons. The common ones are what people see most. You know, the things of horror films."

"So those common ones are what we'll usually fight?" I asked.

He nodded slowly. "That's why it's so important to protect the seals. Most bullets don't even hurt them. Special ones are like killing them with toothpicks."

"So how the fuck are we supposed to do this?" I asked.

Gavin tossed his vest onto the floor. It landed with a hard thud, and then he turned to me. Taking my vest from my hands, he moved that to lay on top of his. I watched as he licked his lips, thinking about what I'd asked, but his answer wasn't at all what I'd expected.

"It's why we're not going to live very long," he finally said. "Brethren hunt and die. We have a better chance because we're immune to the venom that nearly killed Deke. We heal faster. We're resistant to some of their magic. Not immune, Jess. Resistant."

"We're all going to die."

For the first time, the reality of that was starting to set in.
