4.1 Emotion, speech, and moral principle
The first senate meeting of AD 70 is prominent in Tacitusâ narrative of Histories 4 as a moment where the new Flavian regime is experienced as potential for change. We have already seen how the senators create an inaugural ritual designed to mark out the delatores as unsuitable for inclusion in their body. As their enforcement of this new regime turns into a succession of attacks and counter-attacks between individuals, one manâs defence provides a momentâs respite.
