Sunday morning probably should’ve dragged by while Lou waited for the Dungeons and Dragons group to show up. But the time actually went by too quickly, in Lou’s opinion.

That had a lot to do with the lack of a plan. Without one, they risked wasting the opportunity to question Owen about his alibi.

It wasn’t until Silas stumbled in for the day that the idea actually hit her. Silas had his paper rolled and tucked under one arm, as usual. His bowler hat was a little askew that morning, and his fluffy gray eyebrows even wilder than usual.

He grumbled a little as he sat down but puffed out his chest happily when Catnip Everdeen came over and vaulted into his lap.

“I don’t know how you do it,” Lou said as she watched the cat cuddle up with the old man. “She doesn’t like anyone else, but you make her feel comfortable.”

He harrumphed. “I don’t overcomplicate things,” he said. “Other people try too hard to pet her and that annoys her. I just leave her be.”

The line “Don’t overcomplicate things” stuck out to Lou, and she realized that was exactly what they’d been doing with the whole Owen situation. This wasn’t questioning Liza. They didn’t need to come up with some elaborate reason to ask him what he was doing last Friday. George was his friend. She could just come out and ask him why he hadn’t been at their usual Friday night game.

“Silas, you’re a genius,” Lou said.

He grumbled something incoherent just as the D and D group walked through the bookshop’s front door.
