CHAPTER NINETEEN

“What’s wrong with him?” asked the warden impatiently.

“We’re not sure sir, but we believe he may have pancreatic cancer. I’ve run what tests I can from here with our limited equipment, but I’d like permission to get an escort to take him to the hospital in Simmesport. They have an MRI machine and other scanning devices, as well as an oncologist on staff.”

“How long?”

“Two days, maybe three depending on how quickly I can get him there,” said the prison physician.

“Alright, two day is all I’m giving you. I want a full detail on him. Four of our men and two sheriff’s deputies. Make sure the hospital has local authorities on full alert.”

“Yes sir,” he said leaving the office.

“And doc…if he’s stage four…no treatments. If he’s faking or somehow falsified your tests, he won’t need to worry about cancer.”

The doctor nodded at the older man and stepped from the room.

The warden looked out the window and cursed. Webber Delacroix was a vicious killer and if it were up to him, he’d save the state of Louisiana a lot of money and let the bastard die. However, the humanitarians would have his head. Picking up the phone, he dialed the number on the business card on his desk.

“Ms. Robicheaux? This is Warden Pickett from Angola…no, no, he’s here. I just wanted to let you know that he would be getting a short release to have some tests run at a local hospital.” Silence filled the other end of the phone.

“Warden, I appreciate the call and I appreciate that you have a job to do, but I don’t suppose I could convince you to let two of REAPER’s men go with your team to the hospital?”

“That’s highly unusual Ms. Robicheaux. I’m not sure the state would approve that, but…if they just happened to show up at the hospital for…personal reasons…on the same day, well there’s not much I can do about that, is there?” he said smiling into the phone.

“No sir, I guess there isn’t much you can do about that. Thank you, Warden, I’ll be speaking with you soon.”

Pickett hung up the phone and grinned at his brashness in making the call. The Robicheaux family was well known in these parts. West Feliciana Parish might be a good drive from New Orleans, but you don’t have nine boys all from one family become Army Rangers and the state not make a big deal of it. He remembered reading the stories about each of them and thinking what an amazing family they were.

Now it was time for them to show what amazing soldiers they were.
