CHAPTER 20

Lars

Lightning and Cara are staring out the window of our hotel room. Yes, our. Lightning and I are stuck sharing a room again.

“Three agents died,” Cara says. “How the hell did we not see the van? We were outside.”

“It must have come up a road behind the building. I was leaning against that car for a while before you two came out. I didn’t see it, either,” Lightning says.

The local police arrived to investigate. They found evidence of a bomb at one of the entrances and a van parked near the larger explosion. It had been wired with even more explosives. Three agents died, and the other four people in that building are now in the hospital. It was sheer luck we got outside before it went off.

“We may never know what Doug injected you with,” she says.

The lab where our samples were stored was destroyed. We declined to try to explain what happened to the local authorities. Fortunately, our driver, Joe, had gone home for the day to sleep, so he’s safe.

Cara’s phone rings. “It’s my boss in DC.” She answers the call and goes into the bathroom.

“Why the hell does Cara keep forcing us to share a room?” Lightning grumbles.

I glance up at my friend and laugh. “At least we have two beds this time.”

He points at me. “Don’t think that means you can play with yourself.”

“Oh God, you’ve got to let that go.”

“Kind of hard to do. I’ve been scarred for life by it. You know, I’m going to talk to Cara about the room situation.”

I lie down on one of the beds. “If you complain, she’ll put us in one room with a twin bed next time.”

He laughs. “She would, wouldn’t she?”

Cara comes out of the bathroom. “You two can go home tomorrow.”

“What about you?”

“I’ll be leaving, too, but I’ll head back to Seattle. The flight itineraries are being sent to you now. Might as well get some sleep in the meantime.”

I check my phone and spot the message. We need to be at a small airport by ten in the morning. I check the directions, and we have plenty of time. Then we connect in Barcelona before flying home.

“Commercial and coach,” I mutter.

She laughs. “Sorry. I know you like the fancy planes.”

“I don’t care about fancy; I care about decent leg room.”

It’s true. Any guy over six feet will tell you that coach isn’t comfortable. I’m six-three and feel like I’m eating my knees in those seats.

“Of all the things you have experienced in life, this is what you’re complaining about?” She laughs.

“Damn right it is.”

“Did you talk to your boss about a possible traitor?” Lightning asks.

Cara nods. “Another reason we’re all going home. It’s sending the message we are all done with this assignment. My boss assures me he will investigate and get to the bottom of this.”

Her frown concerns me. “Do you not trust him?”

She stares at me for a moment. “I trust him. I’m just not sure what he can do sitting in Seattle.
