Chapter Fourteen

Cold night, inside and out.

So charges had been officially filed. I should be triumphant, but instead feel oddly hollow, like maybe I’d won a war but never engaged in battle.

The lonely warrior. That’s been me my whole life.

I’ve never even known what I was fighting for in the first place.

The river moved in a slow meander of deep water and he sat and listened to it go by, drinking his coffee and thinking about life in general. Chris was of the opinion the peaks and valleys were just unavoidable, and so being notified by the FBI that he was moving forward in the process of potentially becoming a field agent held only a cautious anticipation of success.

In the meantime, he still had a pretty challenging case to solve.

The positive was he had fingerprints now. It would have made his life a lot easier if there had been a hit through the system, but that was a bust, so whoever owned that gun did not have a criminal record.

However, if he could find a solid suspect, he could match the prints and it would be basically over.

So this was not any kind of career criminal but someone still able to gain access to a gun with filed off serial numbers that would identify it. Certainly not very self-possessed to leave it in the hallway, so the culprit was an impulsive killer and certainly Colin’s comments about possible past frightening behavior was an interesting twist.

A brilliant red leaf fluttered down and landed on his leg and Chris absently brushed it off, the breeze cool as he pondered the information. It had rained hard last night and there was a tapestry of colorful leaves all over the ground.

He was pretty decent with cold cases. That was actually what he wanted to do for federal law enforcement. Dissect and put to rest old crimes that had never been resolved. Justice personified.

Right at this moment, he was just glad that Anna Hernandez and Colin’s father had agreed he’d be a good choice to take the kid in as they waited for a trial date. In the meantime, Colin needed to be in school because he was due to graduate in the spring and that was even more incentive to wrap up this case before it ever went to a formal trial. He really needed a chance at life.

No pressure.

Chris called Carter, who didn’t sound too appreciative when he answered. “It’s six thirty in the morning, Bailey.”

“Is it?” He hadn’t even checked. The wind had finally died down, the back porch was quiet and he’d needed to think.

“Don’t you sleep?”

“Not that much. Listen, I’ve been really bothered about something.”

“Three people shot while sleeping in their beds? Huh, go figure, me too. That is bothersome.”

Okay maybe he deserved that sarcasm since he’d obviously woken the man from a sound sleep, which he was sorry about. “Apologize to your wife for me for the early call. Look, do you remember that multiple stabbing about three years ago in Willamette that is just sitting there in a file, unsolved.
