Chapter Eleven

The background on the Reynolds family was pretty much exactly as my client had already laid out for me – husband and wife had attended high school together, gone their separate ways, and then reconnected when they were both living back in Birmingham.

Shawn Reynolds had become a modestly successful playwright, mostly with local productions; good reviews, nothing national so far, but generally well respected among his peers.

Carolyn Reynolds, on the other hand, was something of a superstar by comparison. After Harvard, she’d received her doctorate from Princeton, and landed a plum job with Horizon Healthcare, which was then just coming into its own and undergoing a massive expansion. She’d worked her way up through the biomedical sciences division – whatever that was – until she was in charge of the department. She did that for a couple of years, evidently consolidating her position, before taking time off to have children.

She went back to work full-time eighteen months ago, like Reynolds had told me, and quickly resumed her old position as Director of Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Eugene Pollack – the man who’d run the division while she was away – had been tasked with expanding overseas, and when Dr. Reynolds came back, Pollack was moved sideways, into a newly created post with the title of Director of Biomedical Sciences (International Division).

That was particularly interesting, I thought. Maybe it was worth tracking this Pollack guy down, getting the inside scoop on Horizon’s Chinese operations? Presumably, it was this man who had organized it. And maybe he was easier to get to than Givens? But then again, I didn’t want to spook Givens first, make him increase his own security. He’d be nervous enough as it was, with Reynolds on the loose. Why make things harder for myself? I already knew that part of my deal with Reynolds was getting to Givens, finding out the truth and then . . .

And then what?

Would I let Reynolds have Givens? Would I stand by while Reynolds got his revenge?

I didn’t know what I’d do, but at least I didn’t have to make any decisions yet. There was still time to think about it.

But Dr. Eugene Pollack was definitely a person of interest, and I made a mental note of his details, as well as the picture that was included with the article.

The way I saw it, Pollack had been tasked with expanding overseas, and during that time, links had been made with the Chinese government, at which stage it was decided that it might be mutually beneficial to investigate some kind of bioweapons research program. Upon her return to work, Carolyn Reynolds must have caught wind of this and started her own internal investigation. She’d probably suspected that Pollack was acting alone, that he had used his position to line his own pockets; and so she’d gone to Andrew Givens with her findings, and then . . .

I opened the section on Andrew Givens and Horizon Healthcare Inc.

There he was, the same handsome face, the same beaming smile I’d just seen on TV.
