I pressed the button on my Backpack of Cheer twenty-eight times before the head teacher pulled me into her office. Everyone was looking at me. Some kids even pointed from the other side of the playground. Reggie would’ve been so proud.

On the twenty-sixth time I pressed the ho-hoho button, I did a little twirl to really show off my fashionising efforts. The glittery pom-pom snowballs on my dress fanned out and hit a few people as they walked past. (Don’t worry, they were only made from cotton-wool balls. One time, a few years ago, Dad let me use real frozen snowballs from his special collection in the freezer, but they turned out to be so heavy, the fabric on my outfit split in two, and by lunchtime it just looked like I’d wet myself. It wasn’t quite the look I was going for, but I think I styled it out.)

As I spun and galloped through the school gates, everyone stared at the reindeer stickers I’d stuck to my collar and the flashing lights I had sewn into the seam of my dress. And although I didn’t have a class rep badge like Alice and Liena (yet!), the I love Santa emblem I’d stuck on my dress pocket really made the outfit pop. Of course, I also wore my favourite snow socks and tinsel headband, and hid my knitting needles and wool inside my Hollyhood. Mum had even let me borrow one of her fluffy apron petticoats so that my dress stuck out like one of the ballerinas from The Nutcracker. I was tempted to wear a pair of inflatable antlers like Reggie, but that would have overdone it, don’t you think?

On the twenty-seventh time of pressing the hoho-ho button, I realised I’d forgotten to take a photo of my new school outfit on the christmacam and wondered whether I had time to nip back home. Then the bell rang, and that was when I pressed the button for the twenty-eighth time and Mrs Spencer rounded on me quicker than you could say Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer.

She whisked me into her office with kind eyes and a firm tone and asked me to take a seat.

Was this it? Was she about to say the school had made a silossal (both silly and colossal) mistake and actually they needed me to lead the way and be the Head Elf – I mean, class rep?
