Chapter 27

Hello. You don’t know me, but my name is Dr Judith Walker. I read about Noah Palmer’s illegitimate daughter in the newspaper and that you’ve reopened the case. I have some information that might be of use. I can’t go into detail on the phone, but if you call me back, we can arrange to meet. I think it might have a bearing on the case. Thank you.

“Holy shit.” Will was battling to keep his eyes on the road.

Rob closed his eyes and pictured Judith Walker’s dead body. Her pale face, the hair matted with blood.

He slammed his fist down on the dashboard. “If only I’d checked my bloody messages earlier, there might have been something we could have done.”

Will gnawed on his lower lip. “You weren’t to know, guv.”

“No, but I should have checked.” He shook his head. Shit.

“I wonder what she wanted to tell us,” muttered Will.

“It was obviously important enough to get her killed.” Rob scowled out of the steamed-up window. “What I don’t understand is how the killer knew she was going to talk to us. After all these years?”

“The case has been dormant for over a decade,” said Will. “There was no reason to bump off the doctor before now. The article must have made them nervous.”

“What about after Noah Palmer’s murder?” Rob couldn’t get his head around this one. “Why not kill her then? If she knew something, she must have been a threat.”

“Perhaps she didn’t know it then. Perhaps she only found out recently.”

It was possible. There could be any number of reasons. “I guess we’ll never know.”

Will indicated and changed lanes to come off the motorway. “Whatever the reason, it proves the killer knew the doctor.”

“I agree. Let’s get all the items from her study, every last file and folder. I want to find out who her clients were, who her friends were, and who she was in regular contact with. Also, any people she hadn’t spoken to for a while.”

“Are we going to tell the Super?” Will’s eyes widened as he realised the implications.

“And have this case shut down too?” said Rob. “I don’t think so. Let’s keep the connection to ourselves for now and treat this like any other homicide.”

“Hodge will go apeshit when she finds out,” warned Will.

Rob ground his jaw. “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. With a bit of luck, we can use this case to solve Noah Palmer’s murder as well. Two cases closed will look good on her target sheet.”

“You do realise there is a chance they’re not related?” cautioned Will.

Rob gave him a sidelong glance. “A possible witness leaves a voicemail on my phone and is killed the next day? Come on.”

“Okay, I admit it’s a hell of a coincidence, but it’s not impossible.”

“No, it’s not, which is why we just treat this like a normal homicide. Not a word to anyone.”

“What about the rest of the team?” Will looked worried. Rob understood how he felt. He didn’t like the thought of leaving the others in the dark.
