Chapter Twenty-seven

Friday

Alice had a fitful night’s sleep. She put it down to the talk she’d had with her son. Thinking about what happened to Paul never did her any good and talking about it was even worse. But at least now Michael understood that the rift between his parents was down to his father. That alone would allow him and Alice to mend their own shaky relationship and move on. Alice was grateful to Zandra for the part she’d played. She owed her daughter-in-law huge thanks for putting Michael straight.

Alice rose early and made them both breakfast. “I’m afraid I’ll be out most of the day on this case. You happy to amuse yourself?”

“Yes, I’ll sort some insurance on the car and book us a table for tonight. Don’t be any later than seven now, got it?”

Alice nodded. “There’s an Indian place down the road. The food is great and I’ve been there several times. It’s my favourite take-out too. Their card is on the dresser in the hall.”

“Okay, I’ll give them a ring.”

“You sure you’re okay with this, staying, I mean? Zandra won’t be missing you?”

“Yes, it’s fine, and Zandra understands. Anyway, it’s coming to something if I can’t spend some time with my mum.”

“I’ll be an absent mum for most of the time,” she said, and laughed ruefully.

“It’d be good if you could free up time tomorrow. I would appreciate it.”

Alice nodded. She could do with a day off. “I’ll cook us lunch or we could go out somewhere. I’ll tell the team we’ll resume on Monday.”

“I’m not Dad, you know. I do understand about your work.” Michael poured himself another cup of tea from the pot. “Our chat last night got me thinking, especially about his other woman. I didn’t twig at the time, but I think I may have met her.”

Alice stopped eating and stared at her son. “You think? Or you’re sure?”

“Remember that weekend me and Zandra spent in the Needles Hotel near Ladybower Reservoir? It was just after little Paul was born, and Zandra’s mum looked after him for us so we could get a rest.”

“The one where you met up with your dad and I wasn’t invited,” she said with a look.

“That’s the one. And it wasn’t deliberate on our part. Me and Zandra just assumed you’d be there, we didn’t even know you weren’t coming. When it was just Dad who met us, I put it down to your work and thought nothing more of it. It was Zandra who suspected that something wasn’t right. It caused a lot of bad feeling between us that night. Now I see it was down to me. I wouldn’t listen. She said at the time that Dad was acting odd, but I took no notice. There was a twenties-themed cocktail party on the last night we were there. Everyone was dressed up, drinking heavily — you know the type of thing. Well, Dad met us in the bar and he had a woman with him.
