“So, what did you find out?” Mona asks. She’s sitting at her desk, papers strewn everywhere as per normal. She insists that her mind only works when her desk is messy, and, honestly, I think it’s true. One time I straightened up her desk when she was out of the office and she wasn’t herself for a week.

I show her the picture I snapped surreptitiously when Jonah wasn’t looking.

“Oh, he’s handsome,” she says, grinning. “Is he that cute in real life?”

“Cuter,” I sigh, and then remember that I’m supposed to be a professional. “I think he’ll make a great match for some lucky woman.”

“Seems like he won you over,” Mona says, giving me that knowing little smile of hers.

“Maybe too much,” I say. I can’t lie to Mona. I’m not sure anyone can. It’s one of her magical powers.

“So what sort of woman are we thinking for him?”

Me. But I can’t exactly say that.

“Well, she’d need to be smart. And funny. He seems really focused, too, so it would be better to find him someone with that same sort of drive.

“And where will we find a woman like that?”

“I-I’m not sure,” I stutter. Why is she asking me all these weird questions? I’m not usually this involved in the matchmaking part of the business.

“I have an idea. And she’s right here in this room.”

“Mona, what are you talking about?”

“You were the project this time, Krissa. I suspect he’ll call you before the end of the day. You did give him your number, right?”

My jaw drops open and I have no idea what to say. I can’t even be mad at the subterfuge.

Finally, I manage to say, “Thanks, Mona.”

She stands up and hugs me. “Sweetie, you know the pleasure is all mine.”
