Saturday

Saturday morning. Up early to quickly make and eat my breakfast, and then to face my long list of chores. My list was always long when my Mom thought I shouldn’t be spending so much time at Grandpa’s house. But, today was different. She said I should learn as much as I could from my Grandpa about how to be a carpenter and working with my hands. I worked steady and completed the whole list. Then presented it to Mom. She checked it over and I was off to Grandpa’s workshop. He lived across the field from us and told me that he would like some help cleaning up the workshop. Besides, I needed some more information on Old Herb and the little bit of cash it would earn me for the work always came in handy.

Mrs. Jenkins had given me a list of old folks that might have information or stories about what had happened on the night of February 2, 1864. It struck me funny that it had been a hundred years and still no one wanted to say what they knew or didn’t know.

Because most of the names were people Grandpa knew, I wondered if he would be the right person to go to the old folk’s home and do some investigative work for me.

It took me all of two minutes to convince Grandpa to go to the old folk’s home and check out the names on my list. He said he was headed over there anyhow to play checkers with one of the old guys on the list and thought it would be a good way to spend the afternoon.

It took me most of the afternoon to clean the shop. I vacuumed, put tools back in their places, and prepared the shop for the next week’s work. When it was completed, I headed back home.

My oldest sister was there and ready to go to Dr. Canfield’s. She had given Butch a bath and had him ready to go, also. So, we loaded up and off we went.

Dr. Canfield was expecting us as Butch had an appointment. He was getting old and not eating like he should. Dr. Canfield checked Butch out and confirmed he was getting old and told us we needed to keep an eye on him. He then said, “Where are these bones you have? How did you know about the bones?” “Stephanie called this morning to see if you had been in yet and wanted to know if the bones she found were animal or human?”

I said, “She didn’t find a dang thing, I was the one who had done the digging and sifting.”

He looked at me kind of funny with a big smile on his face and said, Well let’s take a look.

With that we went over to the examining table and I spread out the fragments and the bigger pieces I had found.

When he first looked at the bones, he said they all looked like pig bones. Then he picked up one of the bigger pieces and walked over to the microscope.
