Chapter 16

Raven

I follow my unit back to our room, but slower than them, allowing them to walk ahead of me. Thoughts of what Orion said swirl through me. I look at the males and notice how rigid their backs are as they practically stomp into the school. I am stopped by a handler who takes my horse, and I hurry along after them.

Getting to our room, I toss my bag on my bed, feeling the awkwardness and tension in the air. Archer is the one to break the silence.

“Are you going to tell us what happened?”

I sit on the floor, not wanting to invade any of the guys’ space by assuming they want me on the bed with them. I rest my back on the bed frame and close my eyes, running through what I can tell them and how to avoid the part about my brother, the actual Roe.

“I was spending my holiday in my home, eating dinner, when I heard the screams. I ran out.” I stop there; I don’t know what I would be able to tell them without messing up.

“Why’d you stop?” Archer leans forward superstitiously.

“Sorry.” Clearing my throat, I continue. “I jumped on my horse and rode to my town.” I pause again, reliving everything. “The weird thing was, no one was crying or screaming anymore. A lot of the elderly swordsmen were there, and still, some of the younger females. Yes, they had kidnapped and taken some of the people.” My throat closes as I think of Roe and I feel tears spring to my eyes. I subconsciously rub the bracelet.

I couldn’t share this sadness with them because I was lying to them about who I was. “It was weird, you can tell it was a planned attack because they were in and out before I even made it to town.”

“You didn’t actually see them?” Clay’s voice draws my eyes to his.

“No, I saw them from afar.” Looking away, I look at Archer. “There is not much to tell. They came and went very quickly and even if they would have stayed, we don’t have the manpower to fight them.”

I see the guys’ eyes track to the bracelet around my wrist and I quickly drop my hands, using my uniform to cover it up. Not wanting to explain who gave it to me. Wanting to change the awkward conversation, I plaster on a fake smile, looking at Clay.

“How was your holiday?”

“You would have known had you accepted my invite.” His sarcasm does not miss my notice and I sigh.

“I had things to do, I couldn’t come.”

“What or who were those things?” Garrett angrily says.

Not wanting to deal with this much longer and the snark and anger they are giving me. I get up and get in my bed. “None of your fucking business, I’m done talking.”

I roll over once again giving them my back, effectively cutting them off. “I bet Vash knows.” Garrett snarks. Not giving him the satisfaction of my anger, I keep silent, closing my eyes, needing a nap.
