Our everyday reality is dreamed into being, on an ongoing basis. But that is hard to pin down for people who want to know what-is-what. So it is unlikely to catch on.

It does mean, however, that the gods are dreamed into being. Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and the rest of them, as gods and goddesses, are dreamed into being. Dreamed by what is a mystery. But that does not mean they are not real. Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel, American Gods is a story of how the Old World gods came over to America with the early settlers, but are now dying out because not many people believe in them anymore. Instead, they believe in the new gods such as Mr World and Mr Town and Media. Central to the story is Odin, who is trying to rally the old gods to take on the new.

The point is that the gods need to be believed in to continue to exist. That doesn’t make them ‘just’ beliefs, however. When we believe in something, we dream it into being. The poet William Blake said that
