I collapsed into a chair beside Malcolm's bed and stared at his face. The lines of tension around his mouth and eyes had softened. Nice that he was getting some sleep, because I sure wasn't. My head ached and I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open.

Someone wanted me dead badly enough to pay a lot of money to someone else to kill me, and that wasn't even the worst of my problems. If I didn't find a way to fix Malcolm, a whole bunch of wolf shifters were going to murder me.

Every time I come into contact with an alpha leader, something awful happens.

Every single time.

"Take a break. It's nearly midnight and you're exhausted." Lucas was slouched against the back of the sofa watching me. He'd spent most of the evening patrolling the room in Bengal tiger form to heal his gunshot wounds. Also, I think he got a thrill out of scaring the hell out of the wolf shifters who walked into the room.

"I read every person in here tonight," I said dully. "Nothing."

"Did you spike anyone?"

"No, just read them. A quick glance over their thoughts."

"What about Dick and Agnes? Did you see the way they shoved us out of the way to get to him? I was sure those two were up to something. They're always scheming—not usually together, but stranger things…"

"I got nothing from either one."

"Damn." Lucas almost seemed disappointed they weren't trying to kill Malcolm.

"That doesn't mean they aren't up to something. It only means they weren't thinking about it when I read them. As I told you, I didn't spike."

"Maybe you should have."

"The shifters that visited tonight were all genuinely concerned for him. Most believe I tried to kill him. Roughly a third intend to kill me if he dies. Most don't trust you. None trust me. Call me crazy, but I didn't want to delve any deeper into their brains after that."

"If you were in their shoes, how would you feel?" He rolled to his feet, stopped behind my chair. "I'm the bastard they know and hate. The only thing they know about you is that you could kill them with your mind."

"Yeah, and thanks for announcing that to everyone the first night," I muttered.

"I wasn't telling them anything they didn't already know. Malcolm has spies in my group, remember?" He set his hands on my shoulders, squeezed, rubbed my upper back with his thumbs. My body relaxed into his touch. I hated that he could do that to me so easily, even when I was angry with him.

"Why?"

"Seriously? You've met him, dealt with him. Does he seem like the sort of alpha who would let someone like me get completely out from under his control? He'll always keep tabs on me. It's the way he is."

"No, I mean, why are we doing this?" I turned in the chair so he could see me mouth the words. There were guards outside the door with shifter hearing and guns. "Why are we saving him?"

He pointed at his head, so I read him.
