The next morning, the girls awoke to a low rumble that took them both a few minutes to figure out. It wasn’t thunder rolling across the water toward Whispering Pines. It wasn’t wind blowing through the trees and creaking the high branches. It wasn’t Lake Michigan waves pounding the beach outside their window.

That rumbling was snoring. And it came from a human-size dog, an exhausted goose, and a slumbering little brother. At bedtime last night, the trio had felt brave enough to finally leave their hidey-hole in the kitchen and venture upstairs. But sleeping in Sweet William’s room—all alone—was out of the question. So Willow and Delia had agreed to let them camp out in the room they shared on the second floor.

“Let’s let them sleep,” whispered Delia as she tiptoed past the furry, feathered, and fuzzy-blanketed bodies snuggled on the floor. “We can get cleaned up for the County Fair later, once we’re ready to go.”

Willow sleepily fiddled with the splint that held her injured fingers. She was lying on her side, trying to get her feet onto the floor but failing. She looked like she could use a few more hours of sleep.

“How did you have time to make your bed, Delia?” she asked in a croaky voice.

Delia shrugged and put her finger to her lips to keep Willow from waking the rest of the room. The longer Sweet William, Bernice, and Gossie slept, the more time she and Willow would have for cooking.

“You two are awake early,” whispered Uncle Liam as he shuffled past them in the hallway. “Going to the beach?” Then he added with a yawn, “I’m sorry you girls can’t bake this trip—maybe you can cook together again at Christmastime.”

Delia took Willow by the arm and set off down the staircase.

“Even your dad! Nobody thinks we can do anything this summer, Willow,” she said, whispering into her cousin’s curls. “Today is our chance to prove them wrong. Let’s go!”

The morning was cloudless through the kitchen windows, and the rains of the past few days seemed finally to have passed. Delia was happy to find their cupcakes standing at attention on the table and ready for the final touches. Behind them stretched blue water and blue sky as far west as Delia could see.

“There’s no better way to start the day than like this,” Willow said, pouring two bowls of cereal and heading out to the back porch. “Come on!”

Delia followed her cousin outside and plopped down on the top step beside her. They sat quietly crunching their breakfasts as the waves lapped on the shore down below. But then, right between bites of cereal, Delia heard something unusual in the yard.
