Explanation
Further thought convinced both inspectors that this discovery of Frenchâs did really prove that the case was one of murder. If Sybil Grinsmead had turned the tap off, someone else had turned it on, using great care first, that his own fingerprints should not be left, and second, that the prints already there should be preserved. With one object and with one object only could this have been done.
âBut hang it all, French,â Kendal said, when they had discussed the thing for some time. âEven yet I donât understand it. Why should the deceased have turned it off? Who turned it on?â
âThe murderer,â French returned. âAs I now visualise it, the murderer wanted Sybil Grinsmeadâs fingerprints on the tap. Very well, how could he get them there? Only, surely, in one way. He would light the fire, wipe the tap, and let the lady turn it out again.â
âBut weâve heard nothing about the fire having been lit.â
âI know weâve not. But that doesnât mean it wasnât done. As a matter of fact it would be part of the murdererâs plan to keep it quiet.â
âNaturally, so far as he was concerned himself. But how would he insure that the lady wouldnât mention it?â
French shook his head. âI donât know. Probably if he explained the thing so clearly to her as to leave no question in her mind, she would not think it worthwhile repeating.â
âIf it was Grinsmead he might have annoyed her at the same time so that she might not wish to repeat it.â
âThatâs so, Kendal. Thatâs a good notion. And thereâs another thing. The tap must have been turned on with a tool; something like a spanner which would only grip the edges. That wouldnât affect the fingerprints.â
Kendal ruefully agreed. He was evidently a good deal upset by the discovery.
âCurse it all, French,â he said. âThis will be a feather in your cap all right, but it wonât do me much good. Here Iâve gone into the thing and given it as my considered opinion that it was suicide, and now it turns out that I was wrong! Itâll be some time before I live it down.â
âNonsense,â French returned. âWeâre in the same boat. Here was I about to report the same thing. Iâll tell that to the super, and that it was only chance at the last minute that prevented my putting it in writing. Donât you worry, old man. Itâll be all right.â
âVery decent of you and all that, French. But we canât change facts. However, thatâs not the point. Whatâll you do next?â
âGo out and have another shot at Frayle, I suppose. I donât really know. Between this and tomorrow Iâll have to think up something. I suppose Iâll have to try and find out about that fire being turned on, though of course if only the murderer knows about it that wonât be easy.â
âWonât you tell the super what youâre doing?â
âI donât usually report till Iâm sure of my ground. However, there would seem to be no doubt so far as itâs being murder goes.
