I could barely move as the gun inside Raif’s hand swung in my direction. Though my body was engaged in its own war, muscles tightened and locked in a prison, it allowed me enough energy to let out a small cry and flinch the slightest amount.

The gunshot was a muffled explosion, so close and so final.

Instead of hearing my own cry, I heard my aunt’s at my side, her wail tunneling into my ears louder than all else. But what came next would haunt me until the day I died.

A wall of gray-brown fur passed over my eyes, blocking my view of Raif and the gun before colliding with me and knocking us to the ground. There was a yelp mixed with a whine, and I knew … I knew it had hit him instead of me.

No! Eli.

That was the last thought my mind had before the coiling surge of energy within me snapped, and my torso elongated. The zip ties around my hands broke under the pressure of my ridged body, my muscles stretching and seizing. I unfurled on the ground beneath the weight of Eli’s warm mass of muscle and fur.

And then my skin ripped wide open.

I screamed as the transition peaked, rage and heat and pain cresting into something primal. It commanded control and threw me into the change, my human body giving way to the animal. There was no doubt in my mind that I was seconds from death. I couldn’t convince myself otherwise. The intensity was too strong, too violent, too … everything.

Bones snapped. Skin ripped. Muscle twisted. And then it was all ebbing, the throb inside my head and in every cell of my body tapering into a well of numbness. I recalled from Zavier’s change that it had all happened within minutes. I wasn’t sure how long it had been, but it felt like hours.

And then I was blinking my eyes to the bright light inside the kitchen, to the movement of limbs and shadows. My ears twitched at all the sounds. Breathing, panting, screaming, whimpering. The scents barreled in at once. Male and female. Musk and floral. Wood. Jasmine. Dirt. Leather. Citrus. Blood.

Eli.

My body surged, and I pushed onto my feet—my paws—not bothering to think of the change I’d known to happen. Because my eyes met Raif’s at the same time as another wolf of white and gray struck him. Aunt Sonya. Her lithe wolf body bounded into the air at Raif and collided with his shoulder as he attempted to aim his gun. I hinged back and leaped at him too.

He shifted while I was midair, changing into a wolf with a scarred face and blond-brown fur. His body twisted, trying to escape Aunt Sonya unsuccessfully. Her teeth clamped down on his front leg. And when he snapped at her, he left his throat exposed to me.

I didn’t hesitate. After what he’d done to my family, what he’d done to me—I had to stop him right here and now. All of my instincts kicked in, driving me on like second nature.
