Lenora ran past the butler who opened the Madison’s’ front door for her. It was then that she realized she must look like a dishevelled mess. Her hands snapped to her matted hair and she desperately tried to make herself look acceptable. It was difficult without a mirror, and in her panic, she didn’t think to go look for one in the mansion.

“Lady Mason,” the butler said sympathetically. “We were worried.”

“I’m fi—”

Lady Madison walked down the large staircase in front of the door, her eyes locked on Lenora. It was as if the woman had been waiting for Lenora at the top of the staircase, but that couldn’t be true. Lady Madison had more important things to do than worry about the attendance of every single servant…right?

Lenora swallowed. “Lady Madis—”

Lady Madison stepped off the last step of the staircase and raised her hand. Lenora went quiet.

“This is a disgraceful show of behaviour,” Lady Madison said, her tone so sharp that Lenora cringed. “We cannot have this blatant disregard for responsibility near the Madison name. I’m afraid I must fire you.”

“No,” Lenora said, anxiety driving her as she moved forward. Her words and her footsteps echoed a little throughout the large home. “Please, Lady Madison. Give me another chance. This is the only time I’ve made a mistake. I swear it won’t happen again.”

“You are no longer trustworthy to me. Nothing you say matters now.” Lady Madison shook her head. “Leave on your own, or I will have Gerald make you leave.”

Lenora stood there, frozen in denial. Then she heard the butler—Gerald—come to stand right behind her.

“I apologize, Lady Mason,” he said.

Lenora slowly turned and walked out of the mansion.
