Chapter 9
Taylor woke up groggy, her memories coming back to her at a sleepy pace. The dream was first, chilling and vivid. She remembered Gaffrey catching her, gripping her shoulder from behind and throwing her to the ground. He dragged her down an alley while she kicked and screamed, her arms and legs moving so slowly it was infuriating.
And then she'd broken down. The tears came on their own, and she'd woken up sobbing, feeling more terror than she could ever remember.
Oh, no. Jessie.
The memory of running into him in the doorway had her face feeling hot. But even though she'd been embarrassed for him to see her crying, she'd been so relieved he was there. Stepping into his arms, he'd felt heaven-sent.
But now, awake with the sun shining in her room, it was completely humiliating. Why had she been so shaken by that dream? She groaned, covering her face with her hands. It was so embarrassing. He'd been so incredibly kind to hold her and comfort her⦠and stay in her room! Her hands dropped as she gazed back at the chair, mortified.
Had he been the one to suggest it, or had she? The memory was lost, all she could think of was his smile and the comforting sound of his voice as he'd talked about his mother. She loved the rhythm of it. And the idea that he'd felt so responsible in caring for his mother at such a young age was endearing. Her heart warmed even though she was still cloaked in humiliation. She wanted to see him, but at the same time, her stomach twisted at the thought. What did he think of her now? Sure, he'd been so sweet and helpful, but maybe he was just trying to calm down a crazy, irrational person.
She dressed and got ready for the day, all the while trying to suppress her doubts. When he'd danced with her on the beach, she'd been the one to run away. But last night she'd practically thrown herself into his arms. Hopefully, he realized she was only scared by the dreamâthat was it. There was nothing more serious going on, just a silly crush and a dream that was becoming a curse.
Still, she hesitated to open her door. Her hands felt jittery and uncoordinated when she finally turned the handle and peered into the hall. It was quiet, no lights were on, despite the heavy cloud cover outside. Shadows loomed across the large downstairs. She walked quietly down, searching the corners of the room for any sign of him.
"⦠I'd heard it."
The words came through softly from the kitchen.
"Yeah, I went outside around 3 am. I knew it wasn't a small animal because that board only creaks ifâ"
His voice cut off, and Taylor lowered from the last step. Her mind was spinning, realizing what Jessie was saying. He'd seem someone, or heard them, last night after Taylor had gone to bed. She was sure of it. Otherwise, he would have mentioned it, right?
The memory of her dream and Gaffrey grabbing her by the hair flooded her mind.
