Thoughts of Valerie spin through my head like a tilt-a-whirl, knocking me off kilter as I meet my brother for lunch the next day. He’s in his office in the back of his bar and distillery - The Whiskey Underworld. The name makes me cringe. Nic has a handful of businesses under him now, all gifts from our father. Not that he manages any of them, as he has people for that. This one, however, has become his favorite and hosts his office.

Nic likes to summon, forcing everyone beneath him to come to his office and sit opposite him while he reigns like a king behind his desk. He has an affinity for using others like playthings, but I’ve always been my brother's favorite toy. Even once we were initiated into this thing of ours and nothing but soldati, Nic was clearly still the favored. The leader. Our places were etched in stone from birth. He would take over la famiglia, and I would be the right-hand man who did his bidding.

No other choices were given to me. Not when my father picked me up from my mother’s funeral and told me I was part of the family now. There was no time for grief, no loving words or caring actions. I was simply a new tool, another boy he could mold to be the weapon he dreamed of.

“New Orleans,” Nic begins. “I need you to head out there and try to broker a deal.”

“That’s Costello territory.” Something pricks at my skin. Anxiety, or fear maybe. The jobs my brother sends me on are normally missions to take someone out. There are other things, sure. Deals, taking meetings in his place. Meeting with the bastard Colombo son is both an honor and ego blow, worthy enough to get someone from the family, but not important enough to meet my father or Nic.

But on another family's territory? You need permission from their boss, or else it’s open season.

“Carmine is expecting you.”

I try to muffle my sigh of relief. “And what am I meeting with Carmine for?”

“No.” Nic waves his hand as he takes a bite of his lunch. “You’re meeting with Junior, his son,” he says, chewing his food.

Carmine Costello has built an empire in New Orleans, a web of schemes and businesses that has allowed him to basically run the city. Unlike New York, he doesn’t have other families vying to steal his empire. There are gangs, sure, but nothing big enough to even try taking him down.

The only thing that will take Carmine Costello down is his inevitable death.

Of his four kids, only one is male, and the youngest, Junior, is set to be his successor. I’ve never met the man, just heard of him in passing. A brutal boss who isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. The rumor is he killed his sister’s husband years back, leaving her a widow with two children.
