With everything I'd heard about Jackson Smith, I hated him even before I met him, but I was still about to take a job from him. The main reason was the economy. My college loan debt would not pay for itself. I had hoped a marketing degree would make it easier for me to find employment when I graduated. Six months after I got my diploma, I realized it would be very difficult.

I was the exact opposite of Jackson Smith, who'd had everything given to him. He inherited his wealth from his parents, who had gotten their money passed on from their parents. I resisted trying to get job with him as long as possible because he was such an asshole, especially toward women. I didn't want to default on my school loans, so I had little choice.

“Any questions for me?” Terry, the man conducting my third interview, asked.

“Am I any closer to getting the job?” I laughed nervously.

“Yes. In fact, I want to be the first to welcome you to the company if you take our offer.”

“Is it the one we talked about?”

“Yes.”

The man pushed his black glasses up his nose with his finger as I tried not to smile.

“Good. When do I start?”

“Tomorrow work?”

“It does.”

“Great. We'll have some paperwork you need to fill out, of course.”

I nodded. Inside my mind, fireworks were going off.

“I'll see you tomorrow,” I said as I stood up.

He got to his feet and reached out his hand, which I shook. His skin look pale and white compared to my dark complexion. After the shake, I turned to leave his office, still fighting to hide my excitement. When I walked out into the hallway, Jackson Smith appeared from around a corner and immediately yelled at me at the top of his voice.

“It's people like you in this company that are making it fail. Do you even understand that? Probably not. Typical employee around here.”

“This is my first day,” I said, somehow breaking into his tirade.

“So? Do you want a fucking party? What's all this entitlement bullshit?”

He glared at me. My heart sunk as I realized it might be better for me to not congratulate myself on getting the job.

“I don't know what you're talking about, but...”

“Look, just shut-up, okay? I need someone to get down to the conference room and fix the bullshit with the bus company. Can you handle that? If not, you're fired.”

My eyes widened. Is he serious? We stared at each other in the hallway. Out of the corner of my eye, I spied Terry peeking around the doorway to stare at us. Other people had gathered in the background. As I stared into his eyes, I realized he expected me to fold and quit.

“I can handle it,” I said and headed off in the direction he'd come from. I paused after a few steps and turned around. “Where's the conference room again?”

Jackson laughed and headed to his office, the largest and nicest in the building. Terry rushed over and gave me quick directions, apologizing for his boss' behavior.
