Bryan’s black swimming trunks were over twenty years old. As he hitched them up his chunky white thighs, struggling to get them over the hips, he groaned. They were tight around the groin and waist, pinching his balls inside an unforgiving pouch, while barely covering the beefy expanse of his ass. His buttocks spilled out the bottom, exposing several inches of cheek. It was getting close to two months since he had last been to the pool, but they used to fit better than this.

Bryan slung his gym bag into the locker, together with his shoes. Draping a towel across his shoulder, he headed toward the swimming pool. His bare feet slapped loudly over the wet tiles. His step was almost as heavy as his mood. Why hadn’t he splashed out on a new pair of trunks? He felt out of shape and out of date; painfully conscious of the thickening spread of his waistline and how the worn fabric cut into the flesh of his once peachy arse.

It was seven o’clock on Friday night. Though the pool and the baths were open until midnight, it was quiet. Most people had better things to do at the end of the week than hang around the tired town swimming pool, but for Bryan, Friday night was all he had; a few hours on his own when he could do just what he wanted to do.

A solitary lifeguard sat on duty at the deep end of the Olympic-length pool. In the water, two women in full-body bathing suits and skullcaps swam slowly down the right side of the pool in a cautious, head-above-water fashion. Bryan put his towel on a hook by the door and approached the pool. He was grateful for it being so quiet. He had made a promise to himself to lose a bit of weight and get back in shape over the next few weeks. But he didn’t want an audience to watch him doing it.

He sat down at the edge of the pool and swung his feet over the side, flinching upon contact with the water. It was colder than he had expected. He plunged his legs in deeper, feeling the shock as the cold rose over his knees, all the way to midthigh. After a moment’s hesitation, he took a deep breath and jumped from the ledge. The shock of cold water, enveloping him from his feet to his scalp, was only momentary. Kicking from the bottom, he resurfaced and launched himself into a powerful breaststroke down the full length of the pool. At the far end he executed a neat turn, before powering back down the lane.

Like so many other things in life, swimming was one of those pleasures that he rarely had time for. Since his divorce he had to spend more time at work. With his ex-wife’s alimony, child support and two houses to pay for, many of the luxuries that he used to take for granted were beyond his means.
