Chapter Nineteen

The drive from the airport in Indianapolis to Jonesy’s bar took longer than the flight back from Warren. When the entire MCU, along with Franklin arrived, they found the bar surrounded by city squad cars, along with a host of gawkers standing outside the taped-off crime scene area. Virgil ignored the city cop who tried to stop him from entering his own bar, and when he did, the cop grabbed his arm and spun him around.

Murton was right behind Virgil and grabbed the cop and pushed him to the ground. Then he and Virgil pulled open the front door and ran inside. What they saw stopped them in their tracks…for about a half second. Becky, Delroy, and Robert were handcuffed to the bar rail. Robert had a black eye, and Brent Williams, the former lead detective of the Indianapolis Metro Homicide Unit had his finger in Robert’s face.

“Tell me right now,” Williams said. “This is your last chance before you get hauled down to central booking and charged with murder. Why’d you kill him?”

Virgil hurried over to Williams, with Murton right on his heels. When Williams saw them coming, he looked back at Robert and said, “Better make it quick.”

Murton glanced at Becky, gave her a wink, then pulled Virgil back before the situation became worse than it already was. He walked right up to Williams and whispered in his ear. “If you don’t get your finger out of my chef’s face, Williams, I promise you I’ll show you the other end of it. You’re an embarrassment to the unit you used to run. Now step back.”

Williams lowered his finger and turned to Virgil. “I see your hound dog hasn’t lost his touch.”

“You don’t know the half of it, Brent.” Virgil knew if he didn’t somehow manage to keep his cool, the situation would go from bad to worse. “You mind telling me what’s going on? Before you start, why do you have both my bar managers—not to mention my researcher—cuffed to the bar?”

Murton clapped Virgil on the back. “Get Williams out of here. They won’t be cuffed for long.” Murton took out his handcuff keys and started to unhook his wife and friends.

When Williams saw what Murton was doing, he tried to get past Virgil, who got right in his face. “I don’t know what’s going on here, Brent, but whatever it is, cuffing my people inside their own establishment is way over the top. Where are all your men?”

That’s when Virgil heard the slide on a semi-automatic handgun. “One of them is right behind you,” said the cop Murton had pushed to the ground. “Everybody freeze and set your weapons on the floor, or we’re going to have a big problem here.”

What the cop didn’t realize was that Ross and Rosencrantz were right behind him. Ross took the gun from the cop with such expertise that the officer didn’t know he’d been disarmed until it was too late. “I’ll keep this for now,” Ross said. “My partner will show you out.
