Instead, she used a small amount (always a small amount) of the household supply of water to clean her face. She dabbed at it hesitantly, looking at the way the dirt smeared, and wondering just what she could possibly say to the people of Narrin the next time she saw them. How could she possibly apologize... ?

Apologize? To them? They hurt you! They did this to you! They should be coming on their hands and knees to apologize to you!

She knew that to be true. She knew that she had been ill-used by people for whom she had displayed copious amounts of pa-tience. She had every right to hate them for what they had done. But she could not bring herself to do so, no matter how righteous that anger would be. Call her anything from an eternal optimist to an unmitigated fool, but she still held out hope that, somehow, she and the people of Narrin City would be able to coexist. It had be-come a challenge to her. That was, of course, a foolish reason to pursue this potentially idiotic endeavor. Here she was, telling her-self that she was acting on their behalf, when actually it seemed that she was being motivated by matters of pride more than any-thing. Surely if that was the case, she'd be bringing down on her own head anything that happened to her.
