He was dreaming
The stars spelled
Thug Life
They sparkled
as if the Moon
was laughing
with the Earth
Someone was tickling
His toes
Wake Up Wake Up
His cousin said
We promised Aunt Afeni
We would make dinner
Itâs only 12:30
He answered
But we are frying
drumsticks and thighs
He turned over
Call me in an hour
No Get up now
We have to clean up
Where is my sister?
She went to the Mall
I promised we
would clean up
and cook
But I have to go to the boxing
match today
Take Me! Take Me
with you!
Noâitâs for the Big
Boys Not little
Mississippi cousins
He Woke up
Made Up his bed
They dusted
Washed last nights dishes
Put the electric skillet on
Aunt Afeni really likes
my chicken
You know why?
Because you canât Rap
No, Silly Because of fresh ginger
Can I go to Las Vegas with you?
No But Iâll be back
in the morning
Fry the chicken Tell Mama I love her
The car pulled up
and out He went
A clear night
The stars spelling

He didnât like fights
He liked words

The fight was over

Hoping to get a bit
of sleep
from Vegas back to Oakland

The car pulled out
So did the gun
The sparkle in the sky
called to Afeni

As she crossed Bay Bridge
she knew
she understood
