After a few weeks at home and with Rosemarieâs urging, I agreed to go to the pain clinic and see what they could do to help me get over my need for medication. Rosemarie was very direct and told the doctor about the side effects I was suffering, which I would have minimized.
He was wonderful and listened without making me feel I was a baby for taking so much medication. After talking to us, he gave me a few tests and then studied my chart. âWhy do you want to change medication?â He listened quietly while Rosemarie again told him about the side effects.
âIâm going prescribe something different, and it usually has fewer side effects. Itâs called Suboxone.â* As he explained, it would help decrease my need for strong painkillersâor at least, thatâs how I heard it. Rosemarie could hear what he really saidâthat it would help me overcome my addiction to morphine.
âThatâs fine with me, sir.â
âBut I canât start you on Suboxone immediately. First youâll have to stop taking all your current medications for twenty-four hours. That means no narcotics of any kind.â He looked at me, wanting to be certain I understood.
âTwenty-four hours? Yes, I can do that.â
âRemember,â the doctor said as we prepared to leave, âyou can take absolutely no narcotics for twenty-four hours.â
I smiled, thanked him, and assured him I could go that long without medication. I had never used drugs of any kind before my accident, never experienced withdrawal, and had no idea how dependent I had become since I had lost my legs.
âIt wonât be easy,â Rosemarie said to me as we drove back to our apartment.
âI can handle it,â I said.
How little I knew about myself.
