Chapter Five

7.30 p.m. came quicker than Mr Evans thought it would. The show started and the first contestant answered three questions right, then when he got the next one wrong he had to leave the show, so he went home with a cheque for £300.

The second contestant failed after five questions, so he left with a cheque for £500.

Mrs Carol Grant, the quizmaster’s assistant, took Mr Evans on to the stage in front of the audience and the cameras and introduced him to her husband, the quizmaster, Mr Terry Grant. She read the details off the card she was holding in her hand, telling everyone that Mr Evans was married, had no family and lived and worked on his own farm.

Mr Grant asked Mr Evans what type of questions he had chosen to answer his seven questions on.

Mr Evans looked across at his wife sitting in the front row. She was smiling at him, so he smiled back at her.
