WE WENT AHEAD AND ORDERED food and ate as I had Reo tell me a little more about The Howling Wolf.

“Places like this are a kind of neutral ground,” he said.

I stared around me in fascination. “So some of these people might be Lusus Naturae?”

It’s possible, Souji interjected. But most of them are probably supernaturals who chose to stay out of the fight between the Lusus Naturae and the hunters.

“Did no one ask around in the supernatural community to find out if they knew about the sea monster?”

Reo shot me a look. “Of course we did. Even if anyone knows anything, they’re all claiming not to.”

“So what do we do next?” I asked.

Reo pulled out his phone and showed me a map of St. Augustine. “Look. If we trace the sightings backward, they all lead to this general area.” He zoomed in, then pointed to the map, his finger circling a place on the far side of Anastasia Island. “This is our search area, I think.”

What do you think the woman has to do with it all? Souji asked.

“Maybe she’s the monster’s companion, or maybe the monster’s a shifter and that’s her human form.” Reo shrugged. “Either way, if we find her, I bet we’ll find the sea monster, too.” He glanced at his watch. “And all the sightings happened in the early evenings. Let’s go see if we can arrange for one, too.”

“Yes. Definitely let’s go do that,” I said. “I want to find the sea monster and come back here for more information about who—and what—I really am.”
