Chapter 16

Tad

"Hey, Caliente." I spoke the words softly, owing to the early hour. She froze, one hand on the back of the sofa, the other rubbing her stomach like it ached. I'd heard her thumping around for the last half hour, which she'd obviously put to good use getting showered and dressed. Bit less put together than normal, but I kinda liked seeing her this way, hair slightly askew, shirt not tucked into her jeans yet. "How are you feeling?"

Her nose wrinkled up like she'd smelled something foul. "Like I have a hangover. Not nauseous, thank all that is sacred, but my stomach is about to chew its way out of my body."

I smothered a chuckle in my coffee cup, finishing off the last of the brew in a big gulp. Her hunger last night, both for the food, and the contact, had fed my heart in ways I hadn't known I needed. Already, I wanted to help her again. Rinsing the cup out, I set it in the dish drain for later use, then turned back toward her. "Hunger I can fix. You already applied the first cure, right?"

She held out her hand, three little brown pills nestled in her palm. "Just need a drink. Then something solid to chase it. I don't want a belly ache to start the day."

Pulling a glass from the cupboard, I filled it to the brim and offered it up as she came closer. The wariness in her eyes kinda stung. "Not gonna bite, Callie. We're all good."

Her cheeks flamed and her scent warmed, much like last night as we passed her between us. All three of us had been on the razor's edge of following her down the hall as she left the room. Not that we'd said a word to each other about it, but the damnable thing about being a shifter is that scent never lies. You know when your parents are into each other, you know when your buddy has a hard on for a girl, and everyone around you knows when you are interested, too. Let's just say the teasing in a big family like mine was brutal on a teenage boy. My sisters still liked to give me shit for the first time I'd sprung wood over a Victoria's Secret catalog they'd left lying on the dining room table.

Upside is I now had an idea that Callie might appreciate some nibbling. I couldn't give it to her at the moment, with work needing to be done, but it was a nice tidbit to save for later.

"I just, well, I feel dumb after falling apart yesterday. Sorta vulnerable." She winced like the notion might be painful to admit. "I'm not scared of you, just not sure how to act around you. Don't want to presume too much."

I gestured for her to take the cup, needing to address her physical discomfort before anything else. She took it and washed the pills down fast, chugging the rest of the glass like she'd been in the desert all night.
