Chapter 4
âI didnât expect you to come out of the bathroom so soon,â he said as his face blushed.
I turned my head to look away. It was more symbolic because Iâd already seen everything he had. And I do mean everything. Tom was still shirtless exposing his six-pack abs.
âWhat are you doing?â I asked.
âI thought Iâd go swimming too. You can look at me now,â he said with laughter in his voice.
I peeked over at him. âOh, I guess that makes sense.â
Now the conversation just seemed awkward. I didnât know what to say to him. I hadnât expected to see so much of Tom on this trip. Tom and I headed outside toward the pool. The air was still hot. The sky dazzled with a million twinkling stars. Tom held the gate open for me and I stepped inside the pool area.
âFor a hotel that is all booked I would expect other people to be around,â I said.
âIt is awfully quiet around.â
I placed my bag down on one of the chairs. Tom slipped into the water. I watched him out of the corner of my eye.
I tried to look elegant while getting into the water, gliding down as if I was on a runway or ready to do water ballet. Normally I would just jump right in the water. It was warm thanks to the hot temperatures outside. Tom was swimming. He was pretending not to watch me, but I caught him looking a couple of times out of the corner of his eye.
âThe water is nice,â I said, trying to make small talk.
âFeels good,â he said as he ran his hand through his wet hair.
He really looked sexy shirtless and with water glistening off his hard muscles. I took off across the water swimming a couple laps. Tom stayed at the other side of the pool, watching me and smiling.
âYou're a great swimmer,â he said.
âThanks, I enjoy it,â I said, wiping water away from my face.
âBy the way, what did you do with the book?â he asked.
He was just now asking? I was surprised he hadnât asked for it back by now. Was he testing me?
I gestured toward the lounge chair. âItâs still in my bag. I didnât want to leave it in the room or car. Even if the doors are locked.â
âGood thinking,â Tom said with a wink.
Tom moved closer to me. Water rippled in waves as he glided through.
âSorry to put you through all this. I just didnât think it would be this complicated.â
âYou didnât know the book had to be retrieved?â
He looked at me sheepishly. âWell, yes, I knew that much.â
Movement caught my attention. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted someone coming toward the pool area. I had hoped we would be alone. Just Tom and me. Not that I wanted romantic alone-time. That clearly wasnât the case.
The man approaching the pool wasnât coming for a night dip in the pool. He ran full speed toward the pool area. Panic took over my body.
