Chapter 12

The mice, needless to say, followed me home. There, I found Betty and Karen leaning over the bassinet, watching Gisela sleep.

“How’s the baby?” I asked quietly.

Betty beamed. “She’s just a little ray of sunshine, is what she is, kid. You did good with that one.”

“Why, thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

I stopped and the line of mice jumped atop one another and formed a pyramid.

“Why are Hester’s rodents with you?” she asked sourly.

“Oh, them.” I laid my purse on the table. “I don’t really know. Found them waiting outside Familiar Place for me, and they’ve been following me ever since.”

“Well, they need to unfollow you.” She held out her hand and opened a palm. A broom appeared. My grandmother snatched it up. “Mice are unsanitary. They’ll make the baby sick.”

Karen came over. “What’s all this talk about mice? Eek,” she screeched like a hawk. “Pepper, what are you doing with those mice?”

I sighed. “They followed me. They seem pretty trained.”

“You can’t have mice around my little Gisela,” Karen argued. “They’ll make her sick.”

“That’s exactly what I said,” Betty added triumphantly. “Told her we better get those rodents out of here.”

My heart broke for them. “But they don’t have a home. Where are they going to go?”

“They’re gonna go out and be field mice like they’re supposed to. Now git!”

With that, Betty charged forward with the broom. The mice dropped out of the pyramid and scattered across the floor.

“Now they’re everywhere,” Karen cried.

“I’ll get ’em,” Betty called out. “Don’t you worry!”

She aimed the bristled end at one of the creatures. Betty corralled it toward the sink, where it disappeared into a crack in the cabinetry. She whirled around and spotted another one alone in the middle of the floor, its body quivering.

“Now I’ve got you, you mouse. Pepper, open the back door.”

“Betty, honestly, I don’t think they’re going to harm anything.”

“Just do as I say,” she snapped.

Deciding it was best not to argue, I headed for the door and opened it. Betty looked like a bull with her head down and the broom lowered. I was waiting for her to scrape her feet against the tile floor. But remarkably, she didn’t do that.

She charged at the mouse, who shook for half a second before heading for the open door.

“Aha! I’ve got you,” Betty sang victoriously.

But right as they neared the threshold, the mouse veered to the left and headed into the living room, disappearing under the couch.

“Son of a gun,” Betty protested. “Fine. We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way.”

“I think you’ve been doing it the hard way,” I murmured.

She shot me an angry look.

I shrugged. “I mean, what you’ve been doing doesn’t look all that easy. You’ve been chasing the mice with a broom.”

Betty pushed up her sleeves. “Now we’re gonna use a little magic.”

“Probably what you should’ve done in the first place,” I commented.

“Kid, if you don’t start keeping your opinions to yourself, you’re gonna be in trouble.”

I made a motion of swiping my hand over my mouth and throwing away the key.
