Chapter Twenty-Five

Looking more Alpha than ever before, Johnathan stormed into the middle of the confrontation, lips peeled back, muscles bulging. His throaty growl filled the entire foyer, announcing his displeasure.

“Who the fuck are you?” he spat, looking the woman up and down with disdain. “And why should I not have you killed right here and now?”

The woman composed herself. Not because she was afraid of Johnathan, but because she knew she no longer had the advantage. Or so I thought. As it turned out, she had one last trump card to play.

“Of course,” she said. “Our apologies. Please, allow us to introduce ourself.”

There she goes again. Speaking in the third person, using the royal we, such as it were. Who does this bitch think she–

My thoughts came to a screech. Aaron had bowed to her. Called her “My Lady.” And she spoke using formal royal modes of address.

“We are Elenia, Queen of the Vampires,” she said in a voice cold enough to produce literal frost on my arms.

I swallowed. I didn’t know Vampires could do that. But that wasn’t what held my attention. She wasn’t just a vamp. She was the queen of the vampires. I mean, hell ya to women in power and all, but why the hell was she here? And why for Aaron?

And why was Aaron so calm and glib with her? Why wasn’t he afraid of her? Of his queen?

While I was suitably stunned and perhaps even a bit awed as my natural body heat melted the very faint coating of frost–I’d ask Aaron about that, I decided–Johnathan didn’t give a fuck.

The Alpha stood his ground and snarled at her. “You have entered my house,” he growled. “You have accosted my guests. You have threatened my pack. State your reasons for being here, or leave, before I take personal offense to this.”

The Vampire Queen smiled at Johnathan. As she did so, long, snowy-white fangs slid from her mouth, longer than any I’d seen on a vampire before. “I could destroy you,” she said in a whisper. “Your pathetic pack wouldn’t stand a chance. Not before the might of my Queendom.”

Johnathan just grinned. “Lady, you won’t leave here alive if you so much as touch one of them. Mighty hard to summon reinforcements if you’re dead. Fully dead, I should say.”

The queen stared at the unyielding Alpha and then stood up straight as if coming to a decision.

“Very well,” she said with a sniff. “How rude of us. We shall bid you all a fond farewell.”

Johnathan snorted.

“Thank you, good Alpha,” she continued. “For your hospitality and for forgiving our transgressions onto your property. We assure you, it shall not happen again.”

“It had better not,” Johnathan rumbled ominously.

The queen turned with the ethereal grace of all vampires and stepped back down the stairs. Her guard fell in on either side of her, spears pointing upward as they descended. The queen walked as if she wasn’t surrounded on all sides by angry shifters.

“Follow her to the edge of the property,” Johnathan said to the five shifters on the main floor.
