Sorcha's head did not begin to clear until she knelt in line with the rest of the captured harem. High-heeled sea boots appeared in her line of sight. She kept her head down, but the advancing boots stopped before her and a woman's fingers dug into her hair, forcing her to look up. Sorcha lifted her eyes past the tall sea boots to the pirate's hips and taut stomach. Her eyes lingered on the pirate's bare breasts, rising to meet the woman's gaze only when she spoke. "What are you staring at, precious?"

The pirate captain, her hair as red as the blood smearing her body, let go of Sorcha's scalp and walked on, studying the prisoners in turn. A pair of cutlasses graced her hips; she had Brindani's whip in hand, coiling and folding it as she paced.

"How many do we have?" The pirate captain counted off her prisoners in turn, returning at last to Fethne. "I wonder who's the ship's whore? Never mind; I am Captain Isa Maxine and you're all my whores now. Especially you, blondie; you're cute.” She leered at Fethne, but Odacon's favourite kept her eyes sullenly on the deck.

“As for the rest of you..." Maxine paused to take another headcount, this time of losses on the pirate side. "Six," she said at last. "Six of my girls dead, twice as many wounded, and I had a full crew... That means some of you girls get a break. Any that can sail have a berth on the Revenge. Any that can't, I'll be selling to the brothels on...”

Isa trailed off, and Sorcha glanced up to see what had interrupted the pirate. The door to the captain's cabin stood open, and Odacon stood on the threshold. Only the faintest scarring on his black hide showed he had ever been wounded; his Darian constitution had mastered in a day and a night what a normal man would have taken weeks to heal. Advancing, he stooped to fit through the low hatch, but straightened when he stood on deck and set his fists upon his hips, glaring balefully at Isa and her crew.

"Scum." Odacon took relish in the word, rolling it around his lips. "Where is Rathelon?"

"Pitched overboard," Isa replied, striding from amongst her crew to confront Odacon. The Naril warlord towered over her, studying her as if she were an unusual specimen in a zoo. She stared back brazenly, matching his stance with her hands on her hips, thrusting her bare breasts forward and bulking out her armoured shoulders. Odacon raised one eyebrow and chuckled lecherously. Isa turned smartly on her heel and strutted away, raising one hand to signal her crew. Pistols and muskets came to bear; Isa's hand cut down and her crew opened fire on Odacon. Fethne screamed and had to be restrained by her fellow prisoners, but Odacon merely raised his hand and made a twisting occult gesture that tore the air between his fingers and split the deck beneath his feet.
