We arrive in the middle of the afternoon, and spend the rest of daylight on the slopes with the guys. I’m a little rusty on my board, but the atmosphere is fun, and I don’t feel self-conscious at all about my skill or the lack thereof.

It’s the perfect way to spend a weekend away from school. I don’t have to think about hockey or exams or essays, and even if it’s just for a brief, temporary period, it’s still comforting to be away from it all.

We end up going out to one of the pubs in the resort after dinner. It’s a little pricy, the pubs here catering mostly to tourists, but we make it work.

“God, I can’t feel my fingers,” Parker whines into his beer.

“You were like, the last one off the slopes. Totally your fault, bro,” Nathan says, as he leans back against the cushion. There are six of us crammed into a tiny booth, and Liam is practically sitting on his lap. From the soppy look on his face, he doesn’t seem to mind, though, and I’m a little jealous of the easy touches and glances between them.

“Yeah, but it doesn’t mean I can’t complain about the cold,” Parker counters.

“Poor Captain, many woes,” Owen says teasingly. “Do you guys want to grab another pitcher?”

There are nods all around the table, and Owen calls our server over.

The server comes right away, and I’m not surprised. He’s been eyeing Owen all night, and I’ve been trying not to let it get to me. Owen isn’t a possession, and he can handle this on his own, but there’s still a primal part of me that wants to stamp out, “mine,” on Owen’s body for everyone to see.

“Hey, what can I get for you, handsome?” The server--Mark--asks, smiling coyly at Owen, ignoring the rest of us. He doesn’t look that much older than we do, speaking with a slight accent. Australian, probably. The Blue Mountains are a mecca for Aussies and Kiwis on a working holiday.

“Just another pitcher of Keith’s, please,” Owen says. “And maybe another basket of fries?” He looks around the table, and when no one disagrees, he gives Mark a thumbs up to confirm.

“Sure thing. Anything else I can get for you?” Mark is standing just a little bit too close to Owen, and it makes me want to pull him closer to me.

“Nah, that’s it,” Owen says. “Thanks, bud.”

When Mark leaves, Liam lets out an unsubtle whistle. “He looks pretty cute,” he says, earning a glare from Nathan. “What, I’m just saying. Plus, he’s totally into you, bro.” He points at Owen, who shrugs casually.

“I guess,” Owen says.

“You guess?” Liam says suspiciously. “I bet you could get his number.”

Another shrug. “I don’t know, I kind of want this to be just a boys’ trip, you know?” He hooks his foot around my leg under the table, and I press into the touch. “Besides, he’s not that cute. I’ve definitely seen cuter.”

He throws me a wry grin.
