It didn’t take long to find out. At the end of science class, an announcement was made over the intercom for all cheerleaders to come to the office.

“Our uniforms are here!” Anne-Stuart said.

She bounced toward the door, corn-silk hair flying, before the bell even rang, and latched on to Julia on the way out.

“B.J.!” Julia shouted in the direction of the hallway. “Wait up!”

Sophie got to the doorway just as the three of them took off down the hall, squealing. And leaving Willoughby in their dust. Sophie watched her try to catch up, everything on her drooping as she fell farther behind.

“Why didn’t they wait for you, Willoughby?” somebody called out.

It was Cassie, using the Corn Pop I’m-your-friend-right-now voice.

Willoughby just walked faster, legs stiff. But Julia, now about to turn the corner in the hall, whipped her head around with a toss of her ponytail, and called back, “Oh, sor-ry, Willoughby. We forgot about you.” With another toss she was gone.

Sophie felt a nudge on her arm as Fiona pushed her in the other direction. “We can’t be late to sixth period if all the teachers are gonna be holding surveillance on us.”

Sophie didn’t even ask her what surveillance meant. She was too busy watching Darbie work her way through the hallway crowd ahead of them like a burrowing dachshund.

I can’t do it, Sophie! Darbie had said.

Sophie followed Fiona, bumped by elbows and backpacks and unhappy thoughts.

Who IS going to do it, then?

The Pops were after Willoughby because she made cheerleader instead of Cassie. Would Aurora just let it go because teachers didn’t understand?

“No!” Aurora cried. Her noble, womanly arm came up, fist clenched in the air. “I will uphold the Code, even if I have to do it alone! ”

Alone? You never have to do it alone. Listen to me —

“Hey, get off me, Cue Ball!”

Sophie stumbled forward, one leg tangled in Colton Messik’s too-big pant leg. She could feel them both going down — until something grabbed at the straps of her backpack and yanked her back to her feet. Colton, who was still staggering around to get his balance, looked up and said, “Hey, Coach. How’s it going?”

“Get up, Messik,” said a familiar high-pitched-for-a-man voice.

Sophie closed her eyes and prepared to die. Coach Virile. He was still holding on to her straps, and Sophie could feel his one big eyebrow looming over her.

“Thanks,” she said without looking up at him. Maybe he wouldn’t recognize her.

“Let’s get to class, people. And try not to kill each other while you’re doing it.”

Everybody else scattered like ants, which Sophie would have loved to do if Coach Virile wasn’t holding her captive. Even when he let go as the hall emptied, she didn’t move.

“For such a little thing you sure get yourself into some big messes, don’t you?” he said.

“I don’t try to,” she said to the floor.

“Hey.”

It was a command to look at him. Sophie obeyed. Just as she’d suspected, his eyebrow was hooding his face. But his eyes weren’t poking at her like pencil points this time.
