Cash had wished Emily happy hunting before she walked toward the interior of the Federal building, but part of her wondered what she was hunting for. After she and Mike had spent the day looking at surveillance video of the building, watching Ethan skulk around staring at Nicole from the shadows, she needed to see the place for herself, to walk the halls, to have the building come alive in three dimensions so she could get a feel for what he was up to, and more importantly if there was a way to help Nicole.

Looking over her shoulder, she saw Cash disappear down the hallway. She reached towards her belt loop where she’d secured his badge. Her own badge had been oval in shape. The FBI badges were round. She tried not to look at it as she walked towards the magnetometer. A tingle ran down her spine. Part of her wondered if Cash passing her a badge was a setup. Impersonating a federal officer wasn’t something to sneeze at. She pressed her lips together and kept walking.

There were two guards operating the two different lanes, each of them sitting down, the flow of people in and out of the building having dwindled down to a trickle at this late hour. As she got close, she made eye contact with one of the men. He got off of his stool as Emily pulled her jacket away from her waistband so he could see her badge, then she lifted up the back of her jacket and he nodded toward the side of the magnetometer. “You can pass through over here, agent,” he said, waving her around the open machine and going back to his stool. “Make sure to sign in at the kiosk so we know you’re in the building.” She made a show of stopping at the kiosk, tapping the screen with her finger. For a moment, she considered using an alias, but if she needed Cash to verify her story, it would be helpful if they had her name. Grudgingly, she wrote it on the screen.

As Emily walked away, she wondered if the evening guards were always this lax. They’d barely given her a look once she flashed the badge. She probably could’ve stopped at the local dollar store and gotten a plastic one and they would never have been the wiser. She shook her head. At some point, that was going to give them trouble, but that wasn’t her problem.

At the moment, Ethan was.

Standing in the main lobby, Emily decided to go up to the third floor, where the courtrooms were. She wanted to get a good look at where Jack Gallagher had been earlier that week and where Ethan had spooked Nicole. Pressing the button for the elevator, she waited for a second until the door beeped and slid open. She pressed three on the panel, waiting for the doors to close.

As the doors opened, she could smell cleaning products, a lemon scent mixed with an artificial chemical odor lingering in the air.
