Chapter Thirteen

THEY LAY side by side on their backs, panting. Dex felt gooseflesh on his skin as sweat dried and cooled, and stared at the ceiling, wondering how on earth they’d gotten from talking to sex. It had been great sex—not that he had many previous experiences to compare it to, but it had felt very good.

He was confused, though. He’d thought that the kiss on the observation deck had been a one-off thing, an anomaly of some kind. And now here he was, in bed with Song, and they were both naked and coming down from the high of fantastic orgasms. Dex wanted to grin, to punch the air and crow at the top of his lungs, but he didn’t want to do that in front of Song.

He rolled onto his side and propped himself up on one arm. Song was grinning, and the expression made him look ten years younger. He was incredibly handsome, Dex thought, although not at all like those movies and vid-casts with carefully sculpted male bodies. Song had some scars on his arms, and he didn’t have much muscle definition. His stomach was flat and there was a line of dark hair leading from his navel to his groin, where a dark thatch of curls surrounded his now flaccid cock. His thighs were firm, his legs were lean, and his ankles were bony. To Dex’s eyes, Song was the epitome of gorgeous.

“Give me a few minutes and we can do it again,” Song said.

Dex felt his cheeks heat up. Song had yet to fail to make him blush and he hated that. He wished he could stop it, but his body ignored him and quite cheerfully continued to react every time Song said something a little risqué. He cast about mentally for something to say, some pithy retort, but he couldn’t think of anything. He was saved by Fa’a.

“Everyone to the flight deck. Coming up on approach of Liluri, estimated docking time with spaceport is fifteen Earth-standard minutes.”

Song sat up and got off the bed in one smooth motion. He moved around the bed, picking up his discarded clothes and getting dressed, and Dex sighed and followed suit. He watched Song out of the corner of his eye as they quickly tugged on pants and shirts, socks and boots, and when Song raked his hands through his mussed dark hair, Dex had to look away.

“We leave Will and the refugees here,” Song said.

“Yeah,” Dex said.

“And then we’ll have a chat with the others about Melvile.”

Dex nodded.

They left Dex’s quarters together, and Dex was mortified to see that Manx was feigning sleep. His cat opened one eye and gazed at them for a long moment, then, catching Dex watching him, promptly closed it.

There would be time to talk about things with Manx later. Right now, Dex had work to do, and he kept that thought foremost in his mind as he and Song entered the flight deck. Kasha and Vela were already present, and a moment later, Dex saw Thane and Tariq enter from different directions.
