Chapter 25

The Second Wave

New Hope Town

The second wave of attacking ships hit the chokepoints five minutes after the first wave. Seeing the way the first wave had been greeted by the defenders, the Rift commander, Sub-Commander Luca’po, ordered half of the second wave to use the bulk of the transport to mask their approach. Twelve ships filled with giant warriors split into two columns and sailed towards Mumbai’s midsection. Before getting too close to the transport six turned to the right, while the other six turned left heading for the chokepoints.

Seven more ships sailed east for a mile then turned towards the cliffs beneath the New Hope Academy campus. Before getting too close to the rocks along the shore they turned west and sailed parallel to the shore with barely ten yards between the stern of one vessel and the bow of the next in line. Once past the jetty they would make a sharp right but first they had to sail past the guns of Javelin Company including six APCs with their machine guns. These were the first ships in the second wave to come under fire and Javelin’s Irish and Italian Rangers were very happy for another crack at the aliens.

This detachment of Italians had come in on the Marco Polo and had seen limited action at Villa De La Montana while Grace Ryan’s Irish had been badly mauled at Winter Haven. They were spread out over a 200-yard length of the section of the promenade wall that ran along the cliff above the shore on the school’s south side. Javelin had been too far to the east when the first wave had come in but this time the ships were right below them. Ryan had them wait until the first ship in line was almost past them, then both companies suddenly moved up to the wall and let loose a fusillade that took the first six ships in line unawares. Javelin had been silent earlier and had stayed out of sight so the aliens were under the false impression that they hadn’t entered the danger zone yet.

Each ship had at least 30 Rangers and an APC detailed to fire on it, and the defenders continued to fire at their assigned target until it passed their position barely 20 seconds later. The result was horrific for the giant aliens who were caught on their unshielded right side as they looked forward and up to where they were expecting the closest defenders to be. Satisfied by the result Grace Ryan and Alessandro Romano had their detachments fall back to avoid the return fire the surviving aliens began to send their way. The seventh ship in line was allowed to pass unmolested after it swerved to port and moved further away from the shore.

###

Four more ships had sailed west then swung around and sailed parallel to the shore heading east. They were aiming for the open water along the sunken transport’s port side. They would sail past the two platoons
